A practical checklist for launching a D2C store

Plan your offer, catalogue, operations and measurement before increasing traffic.

Validate the offer before the build

Choose a customer segment, the problem your product solves and the reason a buyer should choose it. Speak to potential customers and test the assumptions that would make the launch expensive if they are wrong.

Know the contribution on an order

List product cost, packaging, shipping, gateway/platform costs, returns and support. Separate fixed business costs from costs that change with each order. Use scenarios rather than treating an optimistic sales target as a forecast.

Prepare a usable catalogue

  • Approved product names, images and descriptions.
  • Variants, prices, stock and shipping details.
  • Clear support, return and delivery information.
  • Product claims reviewed by the responsible team.

Design the customer journey

A store needs clear navigation, useful product pages, contact options and a checkout people can complete on their phone. Select a platform your team can operate after the launch, rather than choosing only by the demo design.

Test the whole order process

Use the payment provider’s test mode where available. Check checkout, order emails, inventory changes, shipping configuration and refund workflows. Get specialist advice for registration, tax and product obligations relevant to your business.

Launch a controlled test

Start with a manageable audience and catalogue. Review enquiries, checkout completion, fulfilment issues and actual contribution per order before raising the marketing budget.

Build the next step around evidence

Improve the problem that affects the next customer most: missing information, a confusing product page, checkout friction or a delivery issue. Keep a short issue list with an owner and a next action.
