Five store tasks worth automating first

Which repetitive e-commerce jobs to hand to automation and AI, and where a human should stay in the loop.

Running an online store means doing the same small jobs every day: answering “where is my order?”, chasing reviews, checking stock, copying orders into a sheet. Each one takes a few minutes. Together they take hours, and the ones that slip are often the ones that bring in money.

You don’t need to automate everything. Start with tasks that are frequent, follow clear rules and are easy to check. Here are five that usually pay off first.

1. Abandoned cart reminders

Many shoppers add to cart and leave. A short, friendly reminder that names the actual items and links straight back to the cart brings some of them back. AI can write each message in your brand voice, mentioning what was in the cart instead of sending the same generic text to everyone.

Keep a safeguard: log every reminder so nobody gets two emails for the same cart, and test with your own email address before customers receive anything.

2. Review requests after delivery

Happy customers rarely leave reviews unless asked, and asking at the right time matters. An automation can wait a set number of days after an order is fulfilled and send a polite request with a direct link to your review page.

3. Support reply drafts

Most customer emails fall into a few types: order status, returns, product questions and complaints. Automation can sort each email, and AI can draft a reply using your policies. The draft waits for a person to review and send. Urgent or angry messages can trigger an alert so they are handled first. This is the right balance: faster replies without letting software speak for you unchecked.

4. Daily sales and stock summary

Instead of opening several dashboards every morning, get one email or message with yesterday’s revenue, orders, average order value, top products, refunds and anything running low on stock. AI can add a three-line summary, but it should only use the real numbers it was given.

5. New orders and leads into one sheet

Sending every new order or website enquiry to a shared sheet and a team chat channel sounds basic, yet it removes a surprising amount of copy-pasting and makes sure high-value orders or hot leads are noticed straight away.

How to start without breaking anything

  • Automate one task at a time and run it in test mode, sending everything to yourself first.
  • Keep a log of what each automation sent or changed, so problems are easy to trace.
  • Keep humans on anything sensitive: refunds, complaints and anything legal or medical.
  • Write down how it works, so the workflow doesn’t depend on one person remembering.

Tools such as n8n let you build these workflows visually and connect them to your store, email, sheets and AI. If you would rather have it done for you, our AI & WhatsApp automation service starts with one agreed workflow, tested and documented.

Frequently asked questions

What should an online store automate first?
